- Location/Neighborhood/Safety

- Schools and day care availability

- Employment opportunities

- Access to public transportation/distance to travel to work

Portability

Your voucher is portable, which means that it will move with you to a new location. That location can be in your neighborhood or county, or anywhere else in the nation! There may be conditions or limits associated with the portability, so be sure to discuss your intent to move with your housing authority representative.

Voucher Payment Standard, FMR & Utility Allowance

The Voucher Payment Standard (VPS), which is established based on Fair Market Rents (FMRs), is the maximum subsidy FHA can provide toward the contract rent. The contract rent is an agreed-upon amount between the housing authority and the landlord and includes the consideration of tenant-paid utilities.

The FMRs are set annually by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to determine the value of rental units by bedroom size and amenities within geographic locations. The schedule contains the FMRs specific to Barnstable County, MA.

Utility allowance is an amount deducted from the household's rent portion when the tenant is responsible for paying the utilities in a unit.
